Frequently Asked Questions

Driveline

How much driveline angle should I have?

The best answer is, “The least amount of u-joint angle is the best amount of angle.” Having said that, youdo need a least 1-degree angle. U-joints have a have a slight angle for the needle bearings to rotate on the cross of the u-joint.

How much slip travel should I have?
In most cases,¾ inch should be the minimum and no more than one inch. That is with the axle supported safely on jack stands or the weight of the vehicle on the axle.
How often should I grease my u-joints?
If they are “greaseable” u-joints that were installed, you should grease them every 3000 miles. If they are” non-greaseable,” you do not need to grease them at all.
Which Turbo 400 transmission do I have?
There are 3 different ones. There is a Long Tail, Short Tail, and a Truck 400.
The Turbo 400 Truck transmission originally had a bolt on the yoke style. However, you can use a yoke that is a slip type that has been machined especially for the Truck 400. See Pie on how to tell if you have the Truck 400 style yoke.

Differential

How hot or what temperature, should my differential run before or after I have installed new gears?
The normal operating temperature of a differential is 175 to 250-degrees depending on the type of driving you are doing. However, running 250- 275-degrees is normal for new differentials during the break-in period. Normal temperature on vehicles with large tires, undersized differentials or while in tow is 200-250-degrees.
Do I have to drive a certain way or keep a watch on my differential after you have re-built mine?
YES! It is especially important to break-in vour new ring & pinion correctly. Is best to drive 15 to 20 miles and let the differential completely cool off before start i ng to drive again. We
recommend doing this process twice.
We highly recommend putting 500 miles on your new differential before doing any type of towing, including pulling an empty trailer.
Should I change the differential oil after my break-in process is complete?

Most people never change the differential gear oil. However, we do recommend changing the gear oil after the 500-mile break-in process. This will remove any metal particles or phosphorus coating that has come from the new gear set.

For normal, daily driven vehicles, we recommend changing the differential gear oil every 50,000 miles.
For hard worked vehicles, such as trucks that do a great deal towing, we recommend changing the differential gear oil every 15,000 miles.
